Why Warming Up Matters (Especially for Busy Moms)

Let's be honest, when you're a busy mom, finding time to exercise can already feel like a challenge.

Between feedings, naps, dishes, school drop-offs, work responsibilities, and the endless list of things that need your attention, it's tempting to jump straight into your workout the second you find a spare 10-20 minutes.

But if there's one habit that can make your workouts feel better, reduce your risk of injury, and help you perform at your best, it's taking a few minutes to warm up first.

Why Warming Up Is So Important

A proper warm-up does more than just 'get you moving.'

It gradually increases blood flow to your muscles, raises your body temperature, improves joint mobility, and prepares your nervous system for exercise. This helps your body move more efficiently and safely throughout your workout.

For postpartum moms especially, warming up can help reconnect with muscles that may not be firing optimally after pregnancy and childbirth. It gives your body time to transition from mom mode to workout mode.

Think of it as setting the foundation for everything that follows.

The Reality of Mom Life

I know what you're thinking:

'I barely have time for the workout itself.'

Trust me, I've been there and completely understand.

As a mom, workouts don't always happen in ideal conditions. Sometimes they're squeezed in during nap time. Sometimes they're interrupted by snack requests. Sometimes you're doing squats while dinner cooks or getting through a workout in short chunks throughout the day.

That's exactly why having a simple, go-to warm-up routine is so valuable.

When you know exactly what you're going to do before every workout, there's less decision fatigue and a greater chance you'll actually do it.

And on those especially chaotic days? Even a modified version is better than nothing.

A few minutes of movement can go a long way.

My Go-To Dynamic Warm-Up

Dynamic stretching is one of my favorite ways to prepare for exercise because it actively moves your joints and muscles through a full range of motion rather than holding static stretches.

Here's a simple warm-up sequence you can use before strength training, cardio, or even a quick home workout:

Upper Body Mobility

  • Chest Opener

  • Arm Swings

  • Arm Circles

Lower Body Mobility

  • Deep Yoga Squat

  • Wide Leg Forward Fold to Yoga Squat

  • Side Lunge Stretch

  • Deep Runner's Lunge with Instep Reach

  • Split Lunge Hamstring Stretch

  • Leg Sweep

Get the Heart Rate Up

  • Butt Kicks

  • High Knees

  • Jumping Jacks

  • Leg Swings

Move through each exercise for 20-30 seconds or perform 5-10 reps per side. The goal isn't to get exhausted, it's simply to prepare your body for movement.

Progress Over Perfection

Some days you'll complete the entire warm-up.

Some days you'll do half.

Some days you'll do a couple arm circles, a few squats, and call it good because your toddler just woke up from their nap.

That's okay.

Consistency doesn't come from doing everything perfectly. It comes from having a plan that's flexible enough to fit real mom life.

Create a warm-up routine you can return to again and again. Keep it simple. Keep it realistic.

Because when you remove the guesswork, you're much more likely to show up for yourself, even on the busiest days.

And as moms, those small moments of consistency add up to big results over time.
